What is your favorite part of the summer internship program?

There are so many great things happening here at Raymond James, but my favorite part of the internship program has been participating in the numerous internship events throughout the summer. These include fireside chats with top executives of the firm, social events outside of the office, and various workshops that help us interns strengthen our skill sets and business acumen. Having the opportunity to be a part of this internship program has given me the opportunity to not only meet so many different people, but also be a part of the unique culture and atmosphere that Raymond James provides for their associates.

I really enjoy the flexibility of the internship program. The summer program is filled with various events that bring all of the interns together weekly, which really makes you feel that you are a part of something bigger than yourself. This program has brought so many students together from all over the country, which really shows the diversity and culture Raymond James has. The people and culture are what drive the firm and myself to constantly learn more and do more. To me, this is not just a summer internship, it is a life-changing experience that builds character, broadens your network, and prepares you for your next endeavor or a lengthy career here in beautiful St. Petersburg, Florida.

How are you going to make this world a better place?

My mantra to make this world a better place is to show empathy and not sympathy. As I grew up, I have always been a safety net for people to express what they think and feel. Intuitively, I could see the world through their eyes and share their perspective. They say one person alone can't change the world, but you can change the world of one person. As Albert Einstein says, “Our task must be to free ourselves by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature and beauty.” I believe empathy can make this world a better place by allowing us to understand the feelings of each other and show compassion and kindness. Throughout my summer internship at Raymond James, I discovered my best strength is empathy and I will be using this to make the world a better place.

I am no Wonder Woman with special powers, but I believe my every action toward kindness and compassion will result in a domino effect of positivity.

What was your first day like at Raymond James?

My first day at Raymond James was very exciting to say the least. One thing that stood out to me was that on our badges, our first name is always bigger than our last name. This would also be how we addressed each person in the office (by their first name) – even the CEO, Paul Reilly. They really drove home the core principles of the firm and communicated them in a way we could all understand and take with us.

The first day is where I realized they were serious about what they said about the culture. Each person I met was incredibly supportive of my quest for more knowledge of the firm and their roles. By the way, each person addressed me by my first name, and would check in on me from time to time.

How do you think your Raymond James experience will benefit you in the future?

Joining Raymond James as a Human Resources intern has provided me with an abundance of opportunities to develop my professional career. Meeting and working alongside professionals in my field of interest has vastly expanded my ability to network with others, while also gaining valuable real-world work experience. Specifically, working with the Organization and Talent Assessment Team has provided me great insight to the everyday challenges I-O Psychologists face in an applied setting. While there have been numerous teaching moments and learning opportunities during my internship, I am truly blessed that I have had the opportunity to gain such a rich experience at a Fortune 500 company so early in my career. I will continue to cherish the work I have been able to perform this summer while also bringing forth my experiences into all of my future endeavors.
